Supermarkets in Medellin are a delight and if you are staying or living in an apartment with a kitchen, cooking is a treat while staying here.

The 4 main supermarkets are:

· Exito
· Pomona
· Carrefour
· Carrulla

The differences between them are not vast but suffice it to say that Pomona is the most expensive, Exito the cheapest and Carrefour probably has the best selection. Carrulla is high standard with a good selection.

Exito

Cheap. Big with a huge selection. Also sells a large variety of cheap clothing, cosmetics, electronics and home articles such as plastic tables, exercise bikes etc.

Owned by Carrefour.

Pomona

Comfortable and up market supermarket but with a smaller selection than the others. Smaller locations carry only frozen chicken as opposed to fresh. At times carries a better selection of up-market imported products. No clothing etc.

Carrefour

Excellent selection. Sells other articles similar to Exito such as clothing and electronics. Pricier but better.

Carrulla

Recently bought by Carrefour and is a general and pleasant all-rounder.

In general the fresh fruits and vegetables are excellent at all the major chains. Fresh red meat, pork & poultry is excellent. Seafood is very good and fresh but the selection is often tropical with a good choice of shellfish. Trout and salmon from Chile are excellent.

Generally you can find large brand imported products but note that these are more expensive than local alternatives that are often as good.

For dairy produce Colanta is the best.
