Colombians are generous when you speak Spanish and will help and correct you pleasantly if you want to try. And if you donīt try, thatīs OK too.

Spanish is the third largest language in the world and spoken by almost 400 million people worldwide! It is spoken in over 15 countries in total and all of South America excluding Brazil.

It is the second largest language spoken in the United States by a huge margin due the explosion of Latin American immigrants.

So when youīre considering whether or not to learn this beautiful language itīs for certain that it will not be a waste of time.

Personally, I have found that it does not take long before you start to pick up words and phrases that you can use in an everyday situation like taking a taxi, ordering food or shopping.

Please allow me to brag about my wife Lina, who has had two childrenīs picture books published. These are of course ideal for learning the language and you can buy them from Amazon. Unfortunately, they lack a photo on the Amazon banner so I have included photos I took from a recent book fare "Feria del Libro" where she also did book signing!

Here are some pictures of Lina at the book signing. The Feria del Libro is a huge expo event held annually in Bogota and Panamericana had a large presence with 2 entire buildings in addition to the childrenīs section photographed below.

If you are interested in literature of all sorts and are going to be in the Bogota area around the end of April I strongly urge you to go for the huge exposure to books that this fair offers. Click here to go to the Feria del Libro official website

Universidad EAFIT offers intensive courses at the language center. Enrollment in these entitles you to a visa as you are considered a full-time student.

I personally attended a semester at the university some years ago and can testify that the courses are excellent with the additional bonus of access to the sports facilities (including 25m swimming pool) and free access to all other classes being held at the university.

This is also a good way of meeting other foreigners who often organize social events.

The campus is friendly, has computers with internet access and a large food court.

Highly recommended!
