Shopping in Medellin highlights the contrasts of this city. Let me guide you through my experiences.

I will divide shopping in Medellininto 4 categories for the sake of simplification. These are:

· Markets
· Malls
· Supermarkets
· Gifts & Souvenirs
· Department Stores
· Electronics and gadgets
· Area/ product specific

Allow me to explain. Taking the time to search for cheaper offers will almost guaranteed provide success but if comfort and ease are your priorities there are easier alternatives.

Markets

In truth, I've been slow in discovering the markets in Medellin but since visiting Plaza Majorista last week, I realize how exciting the experience can be.

Shopping malls

The number of malls in Medellin has exploded and new ones appear every year.

When shopping in Medellin you will notice that imported products tend to be relatively expensive but note that Medellin, being host to a major textile industry, has a number of local designers and brands that are excellent quality.

The major malls host Cineplex's, several restaurants with a wide variety of food, supermarkets and free parking facilities.

Supermarkets

The selection of produce is simply outstanding. The varying climactic regions of Colombia ensures top quality agriculture and fresh vegetables and fruit remind me of Spanish supermarkets with the addition of the best fruit anywhere.

Red meat is superb and Colombia prides itself on its Angus and Brangus cattle. Poultry tend to be chicken or turkey and the chicken tastes like the best corn-fed free-range you can get your hands on in Europe.

Seafood from the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean offers an excellent selection of deep sea fish to delicious shellfish such as lobster, crab and tiger prawn from the Caribbean. Salmon and trout are imported from Chile.

You can also buy cheap clothing, TVs, VCRs, computers, fridges etc. at the biggest ones.

Gifts & Souvenirs

Whether you want to bring something home to remember Medellin by for yourself or as a gift, there are plenty of interesting options for buying well-crafted Colombian artisan products.

Department stores

Department stores such as the Home Center or Home Depot both have a wide range of hardware, bathroom fixtures, electrical equipment, tiling, office and garden furniture/ equipment and so on.

During the time that I have known Medellin these have on many occasions been essential to buying simple furniture, kitchen utensils, bed linen, televisions, VCRs and so on. Traffic being a bit of an issue in Medellin, these add a level of practicality to shopping.

Electronics

I decided to make specialized electronics a category of its own so if you are looking for insight and expertise on rewiring cables, plugs, connections etc., look no further.

Area/ product specific

Shopping in Medellin in what I call product specific areas is exciting because of the experience of being involved in the decisions of making the product.

The carpentry district near downtown and El Hueco is such a place where you can easily have anything made according to whatever specifications you choose.

Alternatively, the International fashion centre of Itagui (Centro Internacional de la Moda) is well worth the visit.
