There is an ever-growing choice of restaurants in Medellin but you need to know where they are.
The regionalism of Medellin means that the restaurants serve mainly traditional fare consisting of plantain, rice, arepa (corn bread), beans, soups or broths. The raw ingredients are fresh, rich in flavor and generally local or national produce. Currently, there are a number of new places popping up around town but unless you know about them, they can be hard to find. Generally speaking, it´s fairly easy to find a restaurant that serves the menu del dia (daily 3 course) and here I recommend follow your instincts and trying out places that appeal to you. The food is cheap and tasty but after a while it becomes a little bland for my liking. Therefore, on this page my ambition is to feature select places that offer something different across the range that offer something unique, fun and friendly or simply delicious.
The warm climate makes eating outdoors in the morning ideal and if on holiday or off to a relaxing start to the day, the fruits, juices and rich coffee do the trick. Located on the parallel street down to the left after McDonalds when coming from the Oviedo Mall, this modern and friendly cafe, has ample seating both inside and outside (covered). They makes eggs any style, bacon or French toast with a choice of bread. You can also get good sandwiches (ciabatta or baguette), salads such as Caesar, tuna, Thai or Italian and they serve delicious coffee.
An excellent cheap option is to order the menu del dia (menu of the day) which typically includes a starter, main course and light dessert. Alternatively, go international and eat some great Italian or Argentine for example. Colombians specialize in grills known as Parillas and the meat is very high quality.
Versalles (Tel: 511 9147) An institution. Straight forward and very cheap Argentine & Chilean Empanadas, superb steaks, fries, green salads in a charming wood paneled setting that attracts the old intellectuals from Medellin. The waiters who have been there for a generation are the friendliest in town. One word of advice; this is in a part of downtown where you don't want to be flashing your Rolex around. Just use your common sense and avoid the area at night. Serves superb food using mainly local produce with strong flavours derived from the specialized use of herbs. Light starters followed by heartier entrées with delicious sauces. Spacious, elegant and stylish with a calm atmosphere. "A" marks the spot on the following map. Just off the Calle 10 (Caye diez), two blocks down from Avenida del Poblado (Carrera 43A) There are a huge number of restaurants in Medellin and these are the ones that I can vouch for that I'm sure you'll be happy with. However, I haven't been to nearly as many as I'd like so...
