Restaurants in Medellin serve mainly traditional fare consisting of plantain, rice, arepa (corn bread), beans, soups or broths. The raw ingredients are fresh, rich in flavor and generally local or national produce.
Generally speaking, itīs fairly easy to find restaurants in Medellin that serves the menu del dia (daily 3 course) and here I recommend that you follow your instincts and try out places that appeal to you. The food is cheap and tasty but after a while it becomes a little bland for my liking.
Therefore, on this page, my ambition is to feature select places that offer something different across the range such as something unique, fun and friendly or simply delicious.
***UPDATE***It's 2010 and the selection of restaurants in Medellin has increased so significantly that I have decided to begin dividing different restaurants by category.
Only yesterday, I had the best Chinese food I've had in a while and I ate in Chinatown in San Francisco only a few months ago...
Generally, the Thai, Japanese and Chinese have disappointed but I think things are about to change.

The warm climate makes eating outdoors in the morning ideal and if on holiday or off to a relaxing start to the day, the fruits, juices and rich coffee do the trick.
ANITA'S (Tel: 310 1770 - 310 1771)
Calle 4 sur No. 43-A 97
El Poblado
Located on the parallel street down to the left after McDonalds when coming from the Oviedo Mall, this modern and friendly cafe, has ample seating both inside and outside (covered).
They makes eggs any style, bacon or French toast with a choice of bread.
You can also get good sandwiches (ciabatta or baguette), salads such as Caesar, tuna, Thai or Italian and they serve delicious coffee.
LUNCH (Click here for more suggestions)
An excellent cheap option is to order the menu del dia (menu of the day) which typically includes a starter, main course and light dessert.
Alternatively, go international and eat some great Italian or Argentine for example. Colombians specialize in grills known as Parillas and the meat is very high quality.
BONUAR
"New Colombian Cuisine"
"Burgers and fries"
Next to the new MAMM (Museum of Modern Art, Medellin)
The new Ciudad del Rio project in the middle of the city just South of downtown, is a great success. Having moved the Museum of Modern Art from the Carlos E. Restrepo area to this new development, injects a large dosage of culture into this part of town.
Bonuar is terrific. Another example of "New Colombian Cuisine" as I like to call it. We tried the shrimp gumbo, large shrimps over a bed of risotto-style rice. Light and tasty. Then, the "Lomito de cerde con chutney de guayaba agria" (Pork chops with guava chutney). Really delicious. I love the use of fruity sauces that are being used more and more frequently in the newer restaurants here. There's also a burger and fries section to the restaurant. A counter to the far end of the room by the red booth-type seating.
The service is good, if a tiny bit slow, and the location is great if you want to drop in on the museum (free). There's outdoor seating and the decor/ layout has a nice rustic feel to it, even though the place in brand new.Good food comes at a price. You can expect to pay between COP 20-35.000 (US$ 10-18) for a main meal, but it's definitely worth it.
One of the better restaurants in Medellin.
VERSALLES (Tel: 511 9147)
Junin: Carrera 49 No. 53 39
(Downtown Medellin near Coltejer building)
An institution. Straight forward and very cheap Argentine & Chilean Empanadas, superb steaks, fries, green salads in a charming wood paneled setting that attracts the old intellectuals from Medellin.
The waiters who have been there for a generation are the friendliest in town.
One word of advice; this is in a part of downtown where you don't want to be flashing your Rolex around. Just use your common sense and avoid the area at night.
Please do visit Versailles if you have a chance because itīs a unique experience and a good spot to relax if you are downtown. One of my favorite restaurants in Medellin.

Spacious, elegant and stylish with a calm atmosphere.
