The cheapest and often best products are to be found at the markets in Medellin - but which ones and where are they?

Supermarkets are fairly fantastic in this city but for charm and notably price, markets in Medellin may be the way to go.

PLAZA MAJORISTA

Plaza Majorista is doubtlessly the most impressive market in Medellin. It is officially known as the Central Majorista, located in the Santa María neighborhood to the South of Medellin in the city of Itagüí, boasting a total area of 288.015m2. Itagüí by the way, joins Medellin seamlessly and is about a 20 minute drive from El Poblado.

There is an enormous selection of grains, vegetable and fruits with some stores selling other items such as food fodder etc.

To name a few:

Chard, pumpkin, celery, green peas, broccoli, white onions, scallions, spinach, coriander, potatoes, parsley, cucumbers, beets, sweet peppers, cabbage, tomatoes, carrots.

Avocado, bananas, strawberries, passion fruit, prickly peer, Tahiti lemons, tangerines, mango, maracuya, cantaloupe, blackberries, oranges, papaya, pineapple, water melon, "tree tomatoes", carrots.

Rice, sugar, white & yellow corn white & red beans and much, much more...

Food is shipped in directly from farms both in Antioquia and nationwide and is of the freshest quality. It is organized by different industrial halls in a sense, subdivided into numerous smaller stores that tend to specialize in a limited number of items. The different halls are divided by type, ie. fruits or vegetables.

The selection is just incredible and the prices around half to a third of supermarkets so if you're doing your weekly shopping, you will doubtlessly make big savings by coming here.

This is a true market in the sense that the prices vary on a daily basis based on demand and supply.
