Day trips are an excellent way of exploring an entirely different Colombia from Medellin.
Keep in mind that although not in the highest regions of Antioquia, this is the most mountainous department of Colombia and that Medellin is at the tail end of the Andean Mountain Range. This offers exciting mountain driving with spectacular views whatever direction you travel.
Santa Fe de Antioquia
is something of a must-see attraction. In fact, my first visit was yesterday! (18th March, 2007) Allow me to share with you the excitement of experiencing this breathtaking and well preserved colonial Spanish town founded in 1541.
El Penol by Guatape
was one of the attractions that I did not see for a while but now that I have finally climbed this spectacular rock and admired the view, I can firmly recommend this outing.
Rionergro is picturesque and beautiful. Rolling green hills on a high plateau 30 minutes from Medellin makes this a delightful area to drive around. This is the area where the rich and famous have their weekend fincas (farms) where they go to golf and play tennis.
Day trips are an important part of getting to know Medellin and a slice of Antioquia as part of seeing rural life, the landscape and a to get a feel of historical influence of the Spanish.
