Antioquia is the beautiful Colombian department in which Medellin lies
Antioquia, home of the
paisas,
in the North Western region of Colombia, is the department to which Medellin is capital.
The region is mountainous and spectacular, offering a large number of destinations and scenic drives, many of which are perfect day trips from Medellin. There is actually a small part of the department that heads all the way up to the Caribbean coastline, just East of the Panamanian border.
For a bit of fun, we've decided to include a page dedicated to
photos of the region
where we also invite you to share your best pictures from the region.
Santa Fe de Antioquia
is the most famous town in the region outside of Medellin because of its Spanish colonial architecture.
Carmen de Viboral
is a beautiful drive from Medellin that specializes in ceramics. It's just past Rionegro and well worth the visit.
Guatape
is another great day trip from the city. The view from the top of El Penol is spectacular and the town of Guatape itself is very charming. The drive is perhaps one of the more beautiful of the day trips from Medellin.
If you're looking for a bit more action, then
paragliding in Medellin
or rather, just outside Medellin, is a great experience. It's fairly easy to arrange a tandem flight and the conditions and view are just perfect. The location is at San Felix which is on top of the mountain just as you climb out of the city on the way to San Pedro.
In case you're wondering about the
Rionegro Medellin
drive in order to get to the airport, it's only about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the route and speed you drive at.
