The Alumbrados Medellin are an absolute must if you are visiting Medellin over Christmas and the New Year
December 8th - January 11th (Yearly) Location: Puente de Guayaquil (Guayaquil Bridge) The Alumbrados Medellin (Medellin Christmas Lights) is a fantastic spectacle of literally millions of lights formed as fountains, houses, religious icons and so on, next to and over the Rio Medellin. The Puente de Guayaquil seems to be a good starting point marked by the A on the Google map below. I recommend parking a little up from the river (to the West) if coming from Poblado. The traffic can be heavy and please remember to only carry whatever cash you need. This is potentially an easy place for pickpocketing.

I recommend simply walking North toward downtown along the river from the bridge for as long as you like and then turn around. What we did this year was walk along the river from the bridge and then loop back around on the path next to the food stalls. Thereīs an abundance of street vendors and food stalls selling candy floss, candy apples, hot dogs, corn on the cob and a whole range of other food. You can also buy drinks and beer.
The atmosphere is very friendly with lots of families wandering peacefully, taking in the magnificent show. I really quite like it. Itīs done extremely well and is one of the largest such events in the world. The city prides itself on the show and due to the amount of energy that Medellin has from hydroelectric, chooses to take on the expenditure that is considerable.
Itīs all in all just worth the visit if youīre here at that time. A nice way to enjoy a safe and peaceful event that is free, with musicians, street artists and all sorts of minor events happening along the river as you glide through this rather surreal experience. Enjoy it!
